V-Visibility/Accountability

The workings of the sheriff’s department must be visible to the
public. This transparency removes any temptation to decline into
unacceptable behavior.

Accountability includes all aspects of ethical leadership and the
conduct of every employee of the sheriff’s office.

Since I believe law enforcement is a service-minded profession,
all employees of the sheriff's office will be held accountable for
the time they spend on duty. County employees should
remember they are supported by taxpayer dollars and work
accordingly. Any place of employment is more enjoyable when
each worker "pulls his own weight" and you know you can count
on the person working next to you to do his part. This will,
among other things, include "worksheets" so supervisors can
monitor productivity.

Deputies will be trained in accident investigation and we will
work the wrecks on our own roads. Troopers assigned to our
county should not have to leave their areas of responsibility to
do our job.

The county will be divided into districts with each deputy
accepting responsibility for his own area. He will be required to
strive to spend the majority of his shift patrolling his district,
being seen by and getting to know those who live within it.

I will require investigators to display determination in solving
crime and showing compassion to victims in the process.

I will demand a high level of ethical behavior. County residents
will be able to have confidence and trust their sheriff's office.

I will establish a random drug testing policy that will be
consistent and fair. It will include every employee of the office,
including me. The citizens deserve to know that those who are
called upon to protect them are willing to demonstrate they are
drug free.

I will maintain an updated, informative website that will be
interesting to visit. On that site I will include the background
and qualifications of any person I hire so the taxpayers will be
able to see the qualified personnel being brought into the office.

I will remember that equipment obtained through government
grants is not "free", but comes from the taxes paid by each of
us. I will assure that grants will be sought only for those items
that will be productive for the office and used frequently.
